CraftedStars — star bonuses on crafted gear (by this site's author)
Lets crafted gear roll the V3 magnitude star bonuses that vanilla grants only to looted and trader gear, with odds driven by your Advanced Engineering perk.
Details
> **This mod was written by this site's author (toshi dev).** It is presented on the same terms as any other mod, with the difference that the implementation can be explained from the inside.
The problem
The **magnitude system** added in V3.0 — the random ★ bonuses shown separately from quality 1-6 — **never applies to anything you craft.** However far you take your workstations, your own weapons get no stars; you have to loot or buy them.
This mod adds stars to crafting. It **never touches quality (1-6)** and only adds the ★ bonuses.
Internally it calls vanilla's own `ItemClass.AddGSStats`, so **a star here is identical in nature to a high-loot-stage drop**. No bespoke maths is introduced.
The odds
Each completed craft rolls once for whether any star appears, then picks how many. Stars land on **random, distinct stats**.
| Advanced Eng. | Any star | 1★ | 2★ | None |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Lv0 | 0% | 0% | 0% | 100% |
| Lv1 | 8% | 7.6% | 0.4% | 92% |
| Lv2 | 16% | 15.2% | 0.8% | 84% |
| Lv3 | 24% | 22.8% | 1.2% | 76% |
| Lv4 | 32% | 30.4% | 1.6% | 68% |
| Lv5 | 40% | 38% | 2% | 60% |
**Since 1.4.0 you can allow three or more stars.** The split lives in `config.xml`, and the defaults reproduce the classic 19:1 one-star/two-star ratio above, so nothing changes until you raise the higher weights.
The number actually placed is capped by **how many stat types the item defines**. Most weapons define five (entity damage, block damage, attack speed, stamina, durability), a handful define three or four, and the rocket launcher defines two.
Why armour and item modifiers never roll stars
This is the part that most needs explaining.
**Vanilla defines stats on only 60 items** — **59 weapons and one tool**. **Armour and item modifiers define none.** Whatever this mod does, nothing can roll on an item with no definitions.
The main mod ships no stat definitions of its own. Optional downloads on the Files tab provide them:
| File | Contents |
|---|---|
| `CraftedStars_ArmorStats` | **72** vanilla armour pieces (light armour rating and max durability — the two rows every armour class actually displays) |
| `zzCraftedStars_ModifierStats` | **35** vanilla item modifiers. **Requires 1.4.0+ with `modifierStats="true"`** |
Both are pure XML and touch nothing else.
**The modifier file needs 1.4.0** because of an engine constraint: the game reads only from `items.xml`, and **its item modifier parser never calls that reader**. With `modifierStats="true"` this mod invokes the same vanilla parser for modifiers, which is what makes such a modlet possible at all.
Requirements
| | |
|---|---|
| Game version | **V3.0** (built and tested against b25) |
| EAC | must be **off** — this is a Harmony code mod |
Installation
Extract into your `Mods` folder. It uses a DLL, so **disable EAC**. For stars on armour or item modifiers, add `CraftedStars_ArmorStats` / `zzCraftedStars_ModifierStats` from the Files tab (the latter needs **1.4.0+ with `modifierStats="true"`**). The odds split is configurable in `config.xml`.
